Dorian Spencer Davies

Dorian Spencer Davies was born in Carmarthen, West Wales and spent his early years in the small West Wales village of Angle Bay.

“ I think growing up in this wonderful, unspoilt, and remote coastal Village had a large influence on my work to this very day. I remember vividly the various boats in the Haven and being fascinated with everything to do with the sea”. Later Dorian lived in Tenby and New Quay, which are two of the most picturesque coastal, harbour towns in the country.

Dorian attended Dyfed College of Art in 1979-1983 studying Natural History Illustration, also achieving membership of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers. He published his first book soon after entitled “ The Heart of Wales Line: An Illustrated Journey” of the railway trip between Swansea and Shrewsbury. During the eighties and nineties Dorian embarked on a career with several London book publishers and eventually worked with Dorling Kindersley as Senior Art Editor for their Children’s book Division for 12 years. In all, Dorian has designed and produced over 40 books for Dorling Kindersley including the highly successful ‘Incredible Cross-Section’ books.

During the late 90’s Dorian returned to Wales to develop his painting. This area of his work soon caught the public imagination and between 1998 and 2006 Dorian has had over 30 exhibitions. Today he paints at his Pembrokeshire home, and is still greatly inspired by this coastline.

“ I am currently fascinated by the light and atmosphere of the little coves and harbours found around this coastal area which have a romantic and timeless feel to them. I also love the Individual characters and personalities of the Fishing boats. I am also planning to paint other areas including the Cornish coast and Irish Harbours”.
